MARINE ECOLOGY FEILD STATION

Marine Ecology Center – Inspired by the Works of Antoni Gaudí

As part of a semester-long exploration into the works of Antoni Gaudí, I studied his architectural philosophy and design attitudes toward form, structure, and spatial experience. Through analytical exercises and hands-on installations including a cube, maze, and trophy, I explored how his principles could inform contemporary design. The culmination of this exploration is the design of a Marine Ecology Center.

The project draws inspiration from Gaudí’s organic sensibilities and his integration of architecture with nature. Designed to evoke the feeling of being underwater, the center uses cave-like, biomorphic forms arranged in patterns reminiscent of coral surfaces. This spatial arrangement not only creates a sense of immersion but also resonates with the program’s mission to raise awareness about marine life and ecology.

The layout emphasizes experiential flow. Publicly accessible spaces are designed as a seamless journey, gradually revealing marine knowledge through form and light. These frequently used areas are oriented toward the sea, offering sweeping, breathtaking views. In contrast, private research areas are located on the upper level with controlled access, ensuring functional clarity and privacy.

The material palette is deeply rooted in the local context. Coral limestone, abundantly available in the region, serves as the primary construction material. Its structural use is inspired by Gaudí’s mastery of compression systems, vaults, catenary arches, and load-bearing walls are employed to ensure the stone remains under compression, enhancing both strength and expressive potential.

This project is a tribute to Gaudí’s legacy, reinterpreted through a marine ecological lens, where materiality, form, and function coalesce into an immersive architectural experience.
