THENNALIN THEERATHORU EDAM
Artist's Residence, Studio & Homestay – Kochi, Kerala
Set amidst the coastal terrain of Kochi, this project, an artist’s residence, studio, and homestay was conceived as a direct response to the site’s dominant climatic challenges: extreme humidity and intense solar exposure at higher altitudes. The design employs simple yet effective passive strategies, with a focus on harnessing wind and mitigating heat gain through form and materiality.
A circular form was chosen to enhance wind capture and promote natural ventilation. Using R-Wind’s wind pressure analysis, the massing was iteratively refined to arrive at an optimal configuration for airflow and thermal comfort. The sloping roof plays a dual role, providing deep shade to protect thermal mass and enhancing the building’s ability to channel prevailing winds.
The tectonic expression of the project is defined by a central datum, with surfaces staggered around it to create a dynamic interplay of volumes and voids. This approach not only organizes spaces within the circular form but also allows for a rich spatial experience through light, shadow, and movement.
Each space is purposefully oriented toward the sea, maximizing cross-ventilation and uninterrupted views of the coastline. Detailing of openings and material selection were informed by thermal performance metrics, such as U-values and Energy Performance Index (EPI), analyzed using the Cove Tool to ensure energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
This project exemplifies a sensitive architectural response where form, function, and environment are in constant dialogue
